YONKERS N.Y. - In the past two weeks Yonkers was hit with a hurricane that knocked out power to more than 20,000 residents and a nor'easter that brought 40 miles per hour wind gusts, but business owners say they are doing just fine.

Michael Kelly, owner of Ren-Dao Wellness Center at 2 Bashford St., said while he expected business to suffer because of the weather, it actually wasn't so bad.

"Because we're located in the business district, which isn't very residential, people had a hard time getting here," said Kelly. "Some clients couldn't drive down here or take public transportation because the weather was so bad. So we canceled a class or two, but that was about it. I consider us to be pretty lucky."

For some businesses including Giovanni’s Restaurant at 25 Main St., the string bad weather resulted in a sales boost, said owner Ben Ukaj.

"The storms were bad for a lot of other people, but not for us," said Ukaj. "Many residents lost power and were unable to cook and stay in their homes, so I think many of them just went out to eat. We definitely seen an increase in customers over the past two weeks."

Business has been pretty slow at Elaine's Florist at 275 Warburton Ave., but owner Elaine David said it's nothing she can't handle.

"Business has been slow, but that's to be expected," said David. "We didn't loose power, or flood so we stayed open, but I wasn't really expecting a lot of people to walk on in considering. Everybody has to deal with things from time to time, and I know we will do just fine. You know what they said about New York, we just hang in there."
