As part of a plan to improve traffic flow and make the center more shopper-friendly, all on-street, metered parking is now free at the Ridge Hill Shopping Center.
The move, which soon will be joined by the removal of more than 100 parking meters throughout the complex, was announced Friday by Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Ridge Hill developer Forest City Ratner.
In place of the metered spaces, Forest City Ratner soon will present a reconfigured traffic and parking flow plan that will increase the handicapped spaces on the roads, create “to-go” spaces to serve restaurants in the complex and provide an improved overall traffic flow, officials said.
Mayor Mike Spano and members of the city council praised the revamping of the complex’s traffic plan.
“I am pleased the City of Yonkers and Forest City Ratner have agreed on a plan that ultimately benefits visitors to Ridge Hill,” Spano said in a statement. “This agreement increases handicapped spaces, and allows for a more shopper-friendly environment and a more effective use of the city’s and Ridge Hill’s resources, which is a win-win for all.”
Removal of the meters already has begun while the new parking configuration plan will begin later this month. Developers say it will make better use of limited roads in the complex.
“Limited on-street parking is better used for special purposes, such as short-term restaurant visits, handicapped parking and for families visiting with children,” said Kathy Welch, senior vice president and director of retail for Forest City Ratner. “Some of the spots will also be eliminated to help improve traffic flow at Ridge Hill.”
Garage parking rules remain unchanged.
