It will be the first Long Island grocery store for Stew's, which has a wine store in Farmingdale. Construction is expected to begin this year and is expected to open in January of February of 2016.

Stew Leonard's also has stores in Norwalk, Danbury and Newington in Connecticut. The business is based in Norwalk.

The Farmingdale location will be across from its wine store in the Airport Plaza shopping center. It is expected to add 400 jobs to the region, and will occupy a space left vacant when the entertainment business Dave & Buster's closed its doors over the weekend.

Stew Leonard's has been trying to build a facility in Long Island since 2002.

“We are thrilled to finally be building a Stew Leonard’s in Farmingdale,” Stew Leonard, Jr., president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “This has been a dream of our family’s since 2002, when we first started exploring options for a new store on Long Island. We know we’ll be welcomed with open arms by all of our friends in Farmingdale and throughout Suffolk County.”

Stew Leonard's is family-owned and operated. It was founded as a dairy store in Norwalk in 1969, and has grown to become a nearly $400 million enterprise with more than 2,000 employees. Each Stew Leonard's store carries 2,200 items and has a bakery, butcher shop and seafood department.
