Restaurateurs Robert Leggio, Edi Dedi and Nando Paterra opened Guapo, an authentic Mexican restaurant serving lunch and dinner dishes, in the heart of downtown Yonkers last week.  The 10 Warburton Ave., restaurant is the group’s third eatery in Westchester and second in Yonkers.

“We’re thrilled to open Guapo and bring authentic Mexican food to the Yonkers Downtown area,” Dedi said in a statement. “The combination of classic Mexican food, family and friends and the Yonkers Waterfront is a winning one and we are excited to be here.”

The trio opened Zuppa Restaurant & Lounge, a white-table clothed Italian restaurant on downtown Yonkers’ Main Street, a decade ago. Five years later, they opened Mima, a second Italian eatery, in Irvington.

The group said it hopes the interesting and delicious food along with excellent service that made their first two restaurants a hit will do the same for Guapo.

“Zuppa was a pioneer in 2003 introducing fine dining in our Downtown when there were few other restaurants in the area,” said Steve Sansone, executive director of Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District. “Guapo is a great addition to the fantastic dining destinations here and to our upcoming Yonkers International Restaurant week to be held in January.”

Guapo, which translates to “the handsome one” in English, features a modern touch on traditional Mexican dishes, owners say.  Its menu includes antojitos or “small snacks” such as tacos, quesadillas and tortas or “Mexican sandwiches.”

Platos Tipicos, “typical dishes”, include enchiladas, parilladas, chilaquiles and chiles rellenos offered with chicken, steak, pork and seafood will also be served. In addition, Guapo has a variety of Mexican “cervezas,” or beers, and sangria’s made with wines from Latin countries including Argentina, Chile and Mexico.

The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
