Marriott Laying Off 163 Stamford Employees Due To Merger With Starwood

A post on the Department of Labor website says Marriott notified the state last week about the 163 layoffs, which will occur between Dec. 31 and Jan. 13.

Martin said the city is aware of the effect of the Starwood-Marriott merger, calling it "disappointing for Stamford and Starwood employees."

“Starwood has given a lot back to our community. Its early and consistent support of the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program benefitted hundreds of high school students, and its training events with the Business Council of Fairfield County have enhanced our local business community," Martin said in a statement.

"While we may be losing Starwood as a corporate citizen, we have companies expanding their offices within Stamford like Indeed.com, Gartner and Synchrony, and companies like Henkel that are moving here from out of state and creating hundreds of jobs," Martin said.

"The Marriott/Starwood integration is in full swing, and with that comes the creation of new positions along with the elimination of some redundancies," Maryland-based Marriott said in a statement.

Most of the affected employees had been notified "some time ago," the statement said. When the merger was announced in November 2015, "we said that there would be some duplication of functions – mostly at the corporate level," Marriott said.

"While we don’t have an exact number of jobs that will be impacted in Stamford at this time, we will know more about staffing decisions as we continue the integration process," Marriott said. "We anticipate having a presence in Stamford for the foreseeable future; we will begin to explore longer-term options and needs now that we have completed the acquisition.

"We also anticipate that many associates will find new opportunities within the company and we will be working closely with them through this process."

According to the Hartford Courant, the layoffs affect employees at the former headquarters of Starwood, which was purchased by Marriott last month for $13 billion. Starwood was headquartered at One StarPoint in the Stamford's South End.

The layoffs include some administrative assistants, executive assistants and specialists in supply chain, design and brand management, the Courant said. But most of those who will be laid off are managers, directors, vice presidents and senior vice presidents, the Courant said.

"Stamford remains a great place for companies and businesses of all sizes, and we are working hard to attract and retain companies that will create Stamford jobs long-term,” Martin said in his statement.

The layoffs are posted at the state Department of Labor website.
