YONKERS, N.Y.- Hyatt is checking in to the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers.
In April it was announced Manhattan-based Friend Development Group, LLC, would build a new hotel with a national brand franchise at the shopping center. At the time, developers said there were several chains competing for the location but Hyatt Place has won the position.
The decision to give the space to Hyatt Place was revealed Wednesday at the city’s Planning Board meeting.
Hyatt executives could not immediately be reached for comment. On its website, however, the company says Hyatt Place are "business hotels," designed with the business traveler in mind.
The hotel is set to be built within the pre-existing nine story office tower and will feature 155 guest rooms and on-site amenities for guests, including a restaurant and bar, an indoor pool and fitness center along with a business center and meeting rooms.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2012 with an anticipated opening date in the summer of 2014.
When the plan to build a hotel was announced in April, Cross County executives said the hotel would be a welcome addition to the shopping center.
“The addition of the hotel is an exciting extension of our redevelopment plans and is an excellent example of how the center has grown over the years to meet the evolving needs of our customers and the community,” James Stifel, executive vice president for Brooks Shopping Centers, LLC, the property’s owner, said in an April statement.
Mayor Mike Spano estimated the project would create 150 construction jobs and another 40-full time jobs for hotel staffers.
“The building of this hotel is the natural next step in revitalizing the Cross County Shopping Center and its surrounding area,” he said in a statement.
Cross County executives also presented plans Wednesday to demolish the now-vacant building that once housed the China City Express restaurant.
In place of the 1,500 square-foot eatery will be two, significantly smaller kiosks that will each host a retail business.
