YONKERS, N.Y. – Shoppers who want to check their email or scan the Web while on the go are in luck.

Boingo, a national Wi-Fi provider, has announced it will bring free Internet access to Westchester’s Ridge Hill this fall.

“Boingo Wi-Fi will allow on-the-go customers to take full advantage of the relaxing environment and unique amenities at Ridge Hill, without missing a beat online,” Joe DeStasio, business development manager for Boingo Wireless, said in a news release.

The Wi-Fi company says it will create web access in the mall’s common areas, allowing shoppers to search the web on their smartphones, tablets and other devices.

According to industry experts, Internet access has become an important part of the shopping experience in recent years.  A June 2012 study from Deloitte Consulting LLP, “The Dawn of Mobile Influence,” found that smartphones play a part in 5.1 percent of annual retail store sales.

And that number is expected to quadruple in the next four years, they say.

The study also found that smartphone users are 14 percent more likely to make a purchase in-store than non-smartphone users.

“Mobile devices are increasingly part of today’s shopping experience, and our Wi-Fi services enable people to get real-time recommendations from friends and share special purchases, while avoiding expensive data charges,” DeStasio said.
