Brown Steps Down As President Of Greyston In Yonkers

Brown has been the leader for 10 years at Greyston, which provides individuals in Southwest Yonkers with employment, skills and resources to lift them out of poverty. 

“I have been fortunate to lead the development and growth of Greyston as a board member and president for the past 16 years,'' Brown said. "With the end of the current strategic plan in December, this is an opportune time for me to move on to new endeavors. I would like to thank the incredibly dedicated staff for making my time at Greyston a rewarding and inspirational experience and recognize their tireless work along with our partners in Yonkers and throughout Westchester for their work. I leave knowing that Greyston will continue to open new pathways and generate hope for the people of Yonkers in need of such opportunities and support in the years to come.

Brown will serve as a special adviser to the Greyston board of directors through the end of 2014 and will actively assist with the transition. 

“Steven has been an inspirational leader who has contributed to the well-being of people in Southwest Yonkers - be they tenants, parents, children, Greyston bakers, the unemployed or the homeless. I wish him well and know that with his influence Greyston will continue its good work,” said Deborah Stewart, chair of the Greyston board of directors. 

During the transition period, Greyston will be led by Mike Brady, president of the Greyston Bakery; Jonathan Greengrass, vice president of Marketing and Development; and Jennifer Solomon, chief financial officer. The transition team will be supplemented by two members of the Greyston board of directors.

Under Brown’s leadership, Greyston has grown into a $17-million force for social transformation in Yonkers. His achievements include the construction and opening of a new 22,000-square-foot bakery facility and the significant growth of its sales and recognition as a model of social enterprise; completion of a financial restructuring of Greyston and the Greyston Bakery; opening a new affordable housing building for 100 families that is contributing to the economic development of downtown Yonkers; creating a new workforce development program; expanding its community gardens program; supporting an after-school and environmental education program for children, and implementing a means for Greyston to quantify the impact of its programs to support the underserved members of the Southwest Yonkers community.

Greyston was established in 1982 and is a pioneer in social enterprise. The organization creates jobs for the hard-to-employ and provides integrated community development programs for individuals and their families to move forward on the path to self-sufficiency. 

Greyston’s programs include affordable housing, job training, a nationally-accredited child care, the Greyston Bakery, and a community gardens program.
